Jo Johnson has spent the past 20 years as a professional educator.  Her love, however, is in the study, practice and sharing of yoga.  She brings that passion and experience into her expressions of yoga through her teachings.  Currently in 300 hour advanced teacher training, Jo has over 500 hours of study of asana, anatomy, physiology, therapeutics, and philosophy. With a solid foundation in studies with Melanie McQuown of Peace Lab Yoga, she is very excited in the continued exploration and discovery of yoga.
For Jo, exploring life's limitations and freedoms on the mat builds strength in character and spirit that supports her off the mat.  She would like to share that experience, shining light and sharing knowledge.

Jo will be teaching Yoga Lab for Beginners to Intermediates.

Yoga is an awesome experiential activity, but can be a little intimidating. We believe that everyone can do yoga and this class will guide you in learning how to move into and out of poses in safe and effective ways.  Learn the basics and then the next steps to a fully formed pose that is right for you!

Come grow your practice with us.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga begins Wednesday, October 4th

9/21/2017

We hear that yoga is for everyone, but if you have experienced some kind a serious illness or a traumatic physical incident, then going to a class with people you swear are like gumby may not be the thing you are looking for.

But this class might be!!  Our trauma sensitive yoga takes into consideration the events in life that cause people pain - emotional, mental and physical suffering.  So in this practice we use language and poses that are safe.  We are careful to use terms that are neutral and suggest poses that are not harmful.

This is a class that offers a safe space for people to get re-aquainted with their bodies and their emotions.  This class is a stepping stone to becoming whole again.

A mix of poses, movement, breath and meditation will be offered.  You can participate in as much or as little as you'd like.  If you would like to come visit and just watch, you are welcome to do just that.

Come join us even if all you want to do is just sit in the room.

Faith & Yoga Classes Resume October 3rd!

Our Faith & Yoga class will resume October 3rd at Calvin CRC.

This class is a very gentle class.  So this is a great class if you are new to yoga because we introduce poses and concepts slowly.  You'll have plenty of time to learn and understand.  It is also a great class if you have some experience and want to get reacquainted with the basics.  You'll have time to refine your movements and spend quality time looking inward.  We generally do 50 - 55 minutes of poses then 30 minutes of guided relaxation and/or meditation.

Our practice is yoga, but our message is Christian.  Come experience for yourself how the practices of movement, breath, and meditation enhance your spiritual life!

This is a Donation class - that means you can pay what you can afford. It is ok to come to class without contributing funds.  But, if you can afford to pay for class, consider throwing in some money to help someone else out.

Join us Tuesdays @ 4:00 to 5:30 pm at Calvin CRC.  Any questions, please email me at [email protected] or call Vicki at (231) 775-7771.

Thank You for Helping at the Beach Cleanup!!!

9/21/2017

We at Blue Horizons Wellness and at Schneider Risk Management want to thank you all again for sharing your Saturday morning with us and devoting a portion of your time to keeping our neighborhood park and beach clean.  A special thanks to Girl Scout Troop 4720 for showing up in force, and to the brave parents and scout leaders who brought them!

The trash count has been tallied and here are the trashy facts:

  • In total, the group picked up over 1120 pieces of trash.

  • The weight of the trash was 21.3 pounds.  That may not sound like allot, but it is reflective of the type of trash found, i.e., lots of foam cigarette butts, plastic and foam pieces, paper, etc.  Not too much of the heavier trash items like glass bottles.

  • Cigarette butts accounted for about 1/3 of the total trash pieces collected which reflects how common smoking still is in the area, and how smokers do not perceive that throwing butts on the ground is littering.

  • Plastic pieces also accounted for about 1/3 of the total trash pieces collected which reflects how pervasive plastic is in our society.

  • The most unusual things found were a shoe and a golf ball.

  • We also picked up the aftermath of a birthday party (paper streamers, birthday candles and sticker backs).

We hope you all enjoyed the event, and we hope to see you again in the spring when we do this again!

Many Thanks!

What is Ashtanga Yoga?

9/18/2017

Ashtanga refers to the “eight-limbs” of yoga as developed by K. Pattabhi Jois.  (More on that in future posts).

The Ashtanga asana practice is dynamic and physically demanding.  This vinyasa practice synchronizes breath and movement to produce an internal heat, which purifies the body. Ashtanga yoga is a wonderful practice for building core strength and toning the body.

The entire set of asanas (poses) is broken down into three series.  Melissa will guide you through a modified version of the Primary Series (set of poses).  Join Melissa today at 5:30 pm for an exhilarating moving meditation.
